Dashai Morton, a 12-year-old from Maryland told her grandmother that what she most wanted for her birthday was to help people affected by recent hurricanes. The 6th grader celebrated her 12th birthday on Oct. 10th. Her wish for the big day was to donate 500 cases of drinking water to the people of Puerto Rico. She reached out to her community to help with an effort she named #ProjectGiveBack.

Dashai collected 460 cases of water by her 12th birthday. To reach her goal of 500, Dashai used birthday money she had been given to buy the remaining 40 cases. But it didn’t stop there. Community members donated more water—dropping it off at her school and her grandmother’s house. Ultimately, she gathered 3000 cases of water and additional non-perishable goods. Talk about Black Girl Magic! We can all learn from Dashai’s focus, heart, and smarts!

Talk about leveling up coming into 2018—what do you have at stake coming into the New Year?
