Discipline

The various ways in which black grandmothers discipline their grandchildren. Also provides insight into the kinds of behaviors that were viewed as problematic as well as expectations regarding morality and behavior. How many of us had to “go get a switch” or experienced “time out” before it was called that when we were told, “Don’t come out that room until I tell you!”? How many of us have been told, “This is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you!” and after being disciplined, “Now go find something to do with yourself!” This also includes stories of how grandmothers intervened on grandchildren’s behalf when other people were disciplining them.
